Author Frank Serafini said, “There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book.” This is the quote that inspired Learning Tree Academy to come up with the “Succeeding is Reading” literacy grant. This literacy grant will provide quality books for the preschool program at Learning Tree Academy. The young learners are ages three to five and they come from lower socioeconomic statuses and have faced many challenges. At Learning Tree Academy, the staff makes every effort to provide quality care and support children in all aspects. Quality books are a necessary tool in the classroom for students and educators. Books can help children through difficult times. Books can also be used to teach about a particular subject area and can be used to teach inclusion and acceptance among one another. Quality books fill children’s brains with endless knowledge that they will carry with them for a lifetime. The proposal is requesting books that include a range of literacy selections to meet children’s interest and abilities. Many of the students do not have tools they need at home to enhance their learning and their first experiences with books and reading takes place in the classroom. As an educational community the staff wants to provide the very best for them which is why this proposal would mean so much to staff, families, and of course the children. All the research points to early literacy being one of the key ingredients to for a successful future.
